There are nine sports sponsored
by the Texas Wesleyan University athletic department. The men's
sports with traditional season in parenthesis are: Soccer (Fall),
Basketball (Winter), Golf (Spring), and Baseball (Spring). The
women's sports with traditional season in parenthesis are: Soccer
(Fall), Volleyball (Fall), Basketball (Winter), and Softball (Spring). Texas Wesleyan also features the most dominant Table Tennis team in the country. Junior Varsity Baseball and Junior Varsity Basketball have also
been added to increase the participation opportunities for students
at Wesleyan.
The Director of Intercollegiate Athletics,
is Mr. Kevin Millikan. The athletic department has a staff which
includes an administrative assistant, sports information director,
a faculty athletic representative, and a head athletic trainer.
Each head coach is responsible for several different activities
including teaching, coaching, recruiting, scheduling, budgeting,
maintenance, fund raising, and team performance.
The athletic department is serviced by two
student groups, the student trainers and cheerleaders. The student
trainers are all in the academic major of sports medicine under
the direction of Dr. Pam Rast. The head athletic trainer is Mr.
Kyle Morgan. The student trainers service all nine sports
by providing coverage for practices and game activities. The
cheerleaders are a recognized student club on campus. Cheerleaders
are selected based on tryouts and cheer primarily at men's and
women's basketball games and provide organizational efforts for
school wide pep rallies.
Texas Wesleyan University has been a member of
the Red River Conference of the NAIA since the fall 2002. The
member institutions are located in Texas, New Mexico, and Oklahoma
and include SW Assemblies of God, Northwood, Texas College, Paul Quinn, Jarvis Christian, University of the Southwest,
Bacone, Wiley, Huston-Tillotson, UT-Brownsville, and Langston.
