JACKSON,
Miss. - Texas Wesleyan shot a blistering 64 percent from the field on its
way to a 109-88 victory over tournament host Belhaven College Saturday afternoon.
Texas
Wesleyan (1-2) rebounded after a loss Friday evening, to finish the Belhaven Classic
with a 1-1 record.
Senior Tommy Johnson
was on fire, hitting 12-of-18 shots from the field, including 8-of-13 from behind
the arc for 39 points to go along with his team-best eight rebounds. Junior Ben
Hunt chipped in with 25 points, canning five treys.
"I
thought Tommy had a dominating performance on both ends of the floor," head
coach Terry Waldrop said. "He set the tone for us early, and the rest of
our team followed his lead. Our guard play was phenomenal today."
Texas
Wesleyan shot 66 percent (38-58) from the floor and an amazing 57 percent (17-30)
from behind the arc. The Rams also shot 76 percent (16-21) from the free-throw
line.
"I thought we executed our offense
as well as we can," Waldrop said. " We had a lot of guys score tonight.
We constantly looked for and found the open man. Without question, shooting the
ball is one of our definite strength."
Belhaven
(4-1) was undefeated before the game and had also knocked off nationally ranked
John Brown earlier in the season. The Blazers shot 56 percent (37-66) from the
field and 39 percent (10-26) from the three-point line. They also shot 50 percent
(4-8) from the charity stripe.
"We are
still learning to play with each other," Waldrop said. "I think that
the defense will continue to improve, as we continue to get comfortable with one
another."

Rams with 10 assists and tallied 11 points, while junior Khayri McKinney added
13 points and five assists.
Texas Wesleyan
will be back in action Tuesday when they host Oklahoma Christian Tuesday evening.
