Box Score

     WAXAHACHIE, Texas -
Junior Ben Hunt continued his impressive play, registering 29 points and 11 rebounds as Texas Wesleyan knocked off Southwestern Assemblies of God, 90-78, Monday evening in Red River Athletic Conference play.

Texas Wesleyan (10-5, 6-1 RRAC) jumped out to an early 18-8 lead at the 13:51 mark on the strength of 11 points from junior Ben Hunt. Fresh off of his triple-double on Saturday against Paul Quinn, the Bendigo, Australia native hit on his first four shots and finished the first half with 15 points.

"Nobody told Ben that he is 6-2," head coach Terry Waldrop said. "It goes to show you that when you play hard, good things will happen. It has really paid off for Ben so far this season."

SW Assemblies of God (6-10, 4-2 RRAC) used a 21-11 run over the next seven minutes to tie the score, 29-29 with 6:04 remaining in the half. Josh Daniels had eight points and Jason Johnson registered seven points during the run.

The two teams traded baskets for next five minutes until the Lions' Jake Sones hit two free-throws with 1:26 remaining to give SW Assemblies a 39-37 lead at the break.

In the second half, Wesleyan jumped out to a quick 55-44 lead with 15:33 remaining in the game, using an 18-5 run to start the period. Senior Tommy Johnson led the way scoring eight points during the stretch.

Josh Daniels three-point play cut the Wesleyan lead to 71-67, with 3:54 left in the game, but the Rams closed the game on a 19-11 run, led by two treys by Hunt.

Texas Wesleyan shot 49 percent (29-59) from the floor and 74 percent (23-31) from the charity stripe. The Rams also shot 38 percent (9-24) from the three-point line.

"We made the extra pass tonight," Waldrop said. "We beat a good team. They defend the three well, but we found a way to win."

SW Assemblies of God shot 41 percent (29-71) from the field and 70 percent (14-20) from the free-throw line. The Lions also shot 23 percent (6-26) from behind the arc.

Texas Wesleyan will be back in action Thursday when they host conference-rival Texas College. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Sid Richardson Gymnasium. The Rams defeated the Steers twice last season.
