FORT WORTH, Texas - Junior Ben
Hunt's three pointer with six seconds left and junior Brad Schilder's
block at the buzzer sealed an 88-86 victory over Jarvis Christian
Monday evening in Red River Athletic Conference action.
After Schilder was stripped of the
ball by Jarvis' James Woodson, Hunt picked up the loose ball and
calmly knocked down the trifecta to give the Rams their third straight
victory.
"At the end of the game we had five
shooters on the court and we were just hoping one of them sprang
loose," head coach Terry Waldrop said. "We were fortunate
to win the game."
In the first half senior Tommy Johnson
connected on his first five attempts from the field, with all of
them coming from behind the arc. The Oklahoma City native's hot
shooting led the Rams (14-7, 10-3 RRAC) to a 32-21 lead at the 8:23
mark of the first half.
Jarvis Christian (4-17, 4-9 RRAC) was led
by Demarion Crite who scored eight first-half points, but the Rams
used their advantage on the boards 21-16, which included nine offensive
rebounds, to take a 48-39 lead into the break. Johnson finished
the first half with 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting. He was also 5-of-7
from the charity stripe in the first period.
In the second half, Schilder canned a three-pointer
at the 16:16 mark to increase the Ram lead to 55-43.
The Bulldogs then made a miraculous comeback
attempt, outscoring the Rams, 38-25 over the next 13 minutes to
cut the lead to 81-80 with 3:07 remaining in the game. Jumperby
juniors Scott Reasoner and Khayri Mckinney put Texas Wesleyan back
up five, with 2:06 remaining.
Jarvis Christian then received two clutch
three-pointers from Brandon Martin to take a one-point lead with
47 seconds remaining.
After Hunt turned the ball over, the Rams
were forced to commit a foul. The Bulldog's Patrick Daniels stepped
to the line with 23 seconds remaining and missed the front end of
a one-and-one. Reasoner battled two Jarvis players to gain the rebound
and call a time out. That set the stage for Hunt's heroics.
"The difference in the game was that
we got a stop when we needed to," Waldrop said. "We had
several hustle plays that we can attribute to the victory."
Johnson led all scorers with 22 points,
while pulling down nine rebounds. Hunt finished with 17 points and
10 rebounds to garner his fourth double-double of the season. Both
McKinney and Reasoner tallied 13 points each, while senior Vince
Williams chipped in with 10 points off the bench.
