LANGSTON, Okla. - Junior Scott Reasoner
had a career-high 20 points to go along with his seven rebounds, but that wasn't
enough as Texas Wesleyan fell to conference-co-leader Langston, 80-69, Saturday
evening in Red River Athletic Conference action.
Langston
(16-5, 13-1 RRAC) opened the game on a 10-2 run in the first five minutes of the
contest. The Lions received a trey from both Steven Alexander and Kendrick Mebane.
Texas
Wesleyan (14-8, 10-4 RRAC) used a 10-2 run of its own over the next four minutes
to knot the score, 12-12, with 11:07 remaining in the first half. Senior Tommy
Johnson scored five points during the run, canning a trey and two free throws.
The
Lions responded with a 23-6 run over the next seven minutes to take a 35-18 lead
with 4:36 remaining in the first half. Quentin Beaty registered five points during
the stretch to key the run.
The Rams cut
the lead to 10 at the break, 39-29, with the help of an 11-4 run to end the half.
Junior Ben Hunt tallied six points down the stretch.
The
two teams traded baskets for the first nine minutes with the Langston lead hovering
around 10 points the entire time. Down, 55-43, Texas Wesleyan went on a 9-0 run,
to cut the lead to 55-52, with 9:43 remaining in the game. Johnson scored four
points and Hunt chipped in with a trey during the span.
Over
the next three minutes Langston rebounded with a 10-2 run, keyed by two offensive
rebounds and four second-chance points. This was good enough to give the Lions
a 65-54 lead with 6:38 remaining in the contest.
Wesleyan
responded with a 13-2 run over the next three minutes, led by 11 points from Reasoner.
The Fort Worth, Texas native tallied four layups and hit one shot from downtown.
At
the 2:56 mark, Johnson fouled out for Texas Wesleyan. With the loss of their leading
scorer, the Rams were outscored down the stretch, 11-2, and committed three costly
turnovers during the final run.
Junior Brad
Schilder registered 14 points, six rebounds and five assists, while Johnson finished
with 13 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Hunt tallied 11 points and four
rebounds. One bright spot that kept the Rams in the game was their free throw
shooting. Texas Wesleyan went 17-of-18 (94.4 percent) from the charity stripe,
which breaks the school record. The previous mark was .920 (23-25) against Incarnate
Word in the 1989-90 season.
Alexander led
Langston 20 points, while Beaty finished with a double-double, posting 14 points
and 10 rebounds. Ryan Davis chipped in with 17 points and a team-high five assists.
Texas
Wesleyan shot 41 percent (23-56) from the floor and 94 percent (17-18) from the
charity stripe. The Rams also shot 25 percent (6-24) from the three-point line.
Langston
shot 46 percent (29-63) from the field and 63 percent (15-24) from the free-throw
line. The Lions also shot 32 percent (7-22) from behind the arc.
Texas
Wesleyan continues its Oklahoma swing on Monday when they travel to take on Bacone
College in Muskogee, Okla. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. The Warriors defeated the
Rams, 74-70, Dec. 13th in Fort Worth. The Rams are currently in third place in
the Red River Athletic Conference. They are now three games back of both Houston
Baptist and Langston with eight games remaining on the conference schedule. Check
