Johnson named RRAC co-player of the year and co-newcomer of the year
March 8, 2005

2004-05 Men's Red River All-Conference Team

     DALLAS, Texas -
Senior Tommy Johnson and junior Ben Hunt were both named to the Red River Athletic Conference first-team on Tuesday. Johnson was also named the conference's co-player of the year, along with Houston Baptist's Ricky Bennett, and was also named co-newcomer of the year, along with Langston's Steven Alexander.

Johnson led the team in scoring and rebounds, averaging 20.9 points a game and pulling down 7.7 boards a game. The 20.9 points a contest was good enough to rank him sixth in the nation. Johnson registered six double-doubles and had nine games with 25 or more points. The Oklahoma City, Okla. native broke the school's single-season record for three-pointers made with 109, and the school record for steals in a season with 80.

Joining Johnson on the first-team was junior Ben Hunt. The Stephen F. Austin transfer was second on the team in scoring (17.5) and rebounding (6.5), and also led the team in assists, averaging 4.8 handouts a game. The Bendigo, Australia native, was a true sharpshooter this season, breaking the school record for three-point field goal percentage at 47.8 percent (100-209) and free-throw percentage at 90.7 percent (107-118). The 6-2 guard registered one of only three triple-doubles on the season, when he tallied 17 points, 15 rebounds and 10 assists against conference-rival Paul Quinn on the road. He also 12 games where he made four or more treys.

The duo helped lead Texas Wesleyan to a 20-12 record, before getting knocked out in the semifinals of the Red River Athletic Tournament in Waxahachie last week. The 20 wins were the second most for Wesleyan since the 1988-89 season.
