Wesleyan athletic teams had an extremely
successful Columbus Day weekend, winning all four contests in
convincing fashion. Mens soccer led the way with two
victories, and womens soccer and volleyball each won as
well.
The mens and womens soccer teams
defeated Louisiana College in a Friday afternoon doubleheader. The
women, in their only action of the weekend, won 3-1. Freshman
Jessica Carrion, last weeks Red River Conference player of
the week, scored all three goals, with assists from Jessica
Killen, Tyler Mabry, Leslie Fowles and Sarah Englehardt.
Said Steve Jones, head coach for both
the men and women, The girls are building up confidence with
every game. You can tell by the way theyre starting to move
the ball around that theyre really playing as a team, and
thats resulting in more quality shots on goal.
The women now stand at 6-6 overall, 1-2 in
conference play.
The men won their game 7-1. Travis Mauldin and
Milan Pandurevic each scored twice, and Rene Mercado scored once
and added 2 assists. Nathan Mutchler and Justin Hill also scored.
Ricardo Gallardo had three assists, while Redi Dibrani and Mauldin
each had one assist
On Saturday, the men defeated conference
opponent Wylie College by a score of 8-2. Mercado scored all three
first-half goals for the Rams, who took a one-goal lead to the
break. Mercado then opened the second half with his fourth
consecutive goal. Mauldin, Pandurevic, and Mutchler each scored
later in the half, as did goalkeeper Josh Gibbs on a penalty kick.
Pandurevic, Dibriani, Chris Hamilton, Eddie Hernandez, and Oscar
Burciaga each added assists.
Im really happy with the
way this team has played the last week or so, said Jones. Earlier
in the year, they pressed too much. They dominated play in many of
the games, but couldnt finish. Now theyre starting to
relax and play with a little composure, and the recent game scores
reflect that.
The two wins for the mens team this
weekend brings their record to 4-8 overall, 1-3 in conference.
Also on Saturday, the Wesleyan volleyball team
traveled to Muskogee, Oklahoma and easily handled conference foe
Bacone College, three games to none. The Lady Rams took the first
game 30-15, the second 30-5, ad the third 30-18.
Leighann Krey led the team with 11 kills in
only 19 attempts.
She really took over the game,
said assistant coach Debi Zuffinetti.
Cortney Johansen led the Lady Rams in assists
(23), digs (11), and aces (6). Nicky Davis added 9 kills, and
Rachel Loftin had 3 solo and 5 assisted blocks.
The win brings the teams record back to
even (8-8) overall, and they improve to 5-2 in Red River
Conference play.
All three teams are in action on Tuesday. Womens
soccer faces Bacone College (8-4, 2-0 in conference) at 2 PM,
followed by the men versus Bacone (7-6, 5-0 in conference) at 4
PM. Both games are at Martin Field on the corner of Collard and
East Lancaster. Volleyball travels to Dallas to face conference
rival Paul Quinn College at 7 PM.
