In the final match of a long day of Red River
Conference volleyball inside the Sid Richardson Gymnasium,
Wesleyan faced Houston Baptist University, ranked fifth in the
nation by the NAIA.
HBU won the match three games to one. In the
end, HBUs size and power up front decided the contest, but
for an extremely young team, Wesleyan held their own. In fact,
they became just the seventh opponent of the now 28-1 Lady huskies
to win a game against them this season, and the first to do so in
9 matches.
After a back and forth beginning, HBU took the
first game 30-20. Wesleyan came back in the second game to hand
the Lady huskies their worst single game defeat of the season,
30-17. Wesleyan took an early lead in the third game, but HBU,
behind a very strong service game, surged ahead and won 30-19. In
the fourth game, Wesleyan held a 21-15 lead before HBU went on a
15-5 run to win the game 30-26.
Leading the Lady Huskies with 21 kills was NAIA
national player of the week Elele Ekadeli. Leighann Krey led
Wesleyan with 20.
In action earlier in the day, Wesleyan defeated
conference rival Huston-Tillotson College, three games to none.
The Lady Rams of Texas Wesleyan (both schools use the ram as their
mascot) won the first game 30-18, before winning the next two
games 30-10, using mostly reserve players.
Also in the Sid Richardson Gymnasium on Friday,
Houston Baptist defeated Paul Quinn College, three games to none,
and Huston-Tillotson defeated Paul Quinn, three to two.
After the two match split, Wesleyan record
stands at 13-10, 9-3 in Red River Conference play. The Lady Rams
take to the court on Saturday to face LeTourneau University. Game
time is 3:30 in the Sid Richardson Center.
