Johansen, Carrion Win Conference Volleyball, Women's Soccer Honors
November 4, 2002

FORT WORTH, Texas – Cortney Johansen, setter for the Lady Ram volleyball team, and Jessica Carrion, a forward on the women’s soccer team, were honored this week as Red River Conference Players of the Week. For Johansen, it is her second such award this season. Carrion has now won three times.

Johansen helped guide the Lady Ram volleyball team to a 4-0 week with 187 assists. She tallied 49 against Southwestern University in Georgetown on Monday, followed by 48 in Tuesday’s match against Southwestern Assemblies of God. She closed out the week by posting 38 against UT-Permian basin on Friday, then 52 on Saturday against College of the Southwest. The 5-7 sophomore from Colleyville, Texas, averaged 12.5 assists per game and chipped in 29 digs on the week, as Wesleyan clinched the Red River Conference Western Division title.

Carrion, who previously won this award on October 1st and 15th, led the Lady Ram soccer team to two victories in their final week of regular season play. She scored once and had two assists in Wesleyan’s 3-2 victory over the University of the Ozarks on Friday, then posted six goals in 70 minutes of Sunday’s regular-season finale, a 7-2 win at Texas A&M-International. Her scoring outburst against the Lady Dustdevils puts her in a tie for fifth on the all-time NAIA single-game scoring record book. She finishes the season with 25 goals and a 1.56 goals-per-game average, the highest totals in the conference. She also ends the season with a stunning 3.31 points-per-game average, which is nearly 1.5 points higher than the next closest total in the conference.

Women’s soccer next take the field on Tuesday, November 5th, at Bacone College in the first round of the Red River Conference playoffs. Volleyball has two home games remaining before their post-season tournament. This Tuesday the Lady Rams face Texas Women’s University, and close out the regular season the following Tuesday against Southwestern Assemblies of God. Both games begin at 7:00 PM.
