FORT WORTH, Texas Cortney Johansen,
setter for the Lady Ram volleyball team, and Jessica Carrion, a
forward on the womens soccer team, were honored this week as
Red River Conference Players of the Week. For Johansen, it is her
second such award this season. Carrion has now won three times.
Johansen helped guide the Lady Ram volleyball
team to a 4-0 week with 187 assists. She tallied 49 against
Southwestern University in Georgetown on Monday, followed by 48 in
Tuesdays match against Southwestern Assemblies of God. She
closed out the week by posting 38 against UT-Permian basin on
Friday, then 52 on Saturday against College of the Southwest. The
5-7 sophomore from Colleyville, Texas, averaged 12.5 assists per
game and chipped in 29 digs on the week, as Wesleyan clinched the
Red River Conference Western Division title.
Carrion, who previously won this award on
October 1st and 15th, led the Lady Ram soccer team to two
victories in their final week of regular season play. She scored
once and had two assists in Wesleyans 3-2 victory over the
University of the Ozarks on Friday, then posted six goals in 70
minutes of Sundays regular-season finale, a 7-2 win at Texas
A&M-International. Her scoring outburst against the Lady
Dustdevils puts her in a tie for fifth on the all-time NAIA
single-game scoring record book. She finishes the season with 25
goals and a 1.56 goals-per-game average, the highest totals in the
conference. She also ends the season with a stunning 3.31
points-per-game average, which is nearly 1.5 points higher than
the next closest total in the conference.
Womens soccer next take the field on
Tuesday, November 5th, at Bacone College in the first round of the
Red River Conference playoffs. Volleyball has two home games
remaining before their post-season tournament. This Tuesday the
Lady Rams face Texas Womens University, and close out the
regular season the following Tuesday against Southwestern
Assemblies of God. Both games begin at 7:00 PM.
