FORT WORTH, Texas Facing constant
full-court pressure, the Lady Rams couldnt hold onto the
ball, and it cost them as they fell to Texas College 69-48 on
Monday night in the Sid Richardson Gymnasium. Turnovers were the
name of the game, as at halftime, and again with 2:13 remaining in
the game, the Lady Rams actually had more of them than points.
For the first 12 minutes of the contest,
neither team seemed to be firing on all cylinders. Both were
shooting poorly and having trouble holding onto the ball. As the
clocked rolled under eight minutes remaining in the half, the Lady
Steers held a 17-15 lead, and the teams had combined for 29
turnovers.
Then, the Lady Steers got hot. Rebecca Phipps
buried a jumper, beginning an 11-0 run that would extend the lead
to 13 at the two-minute mark. After Phipps connected, Tasha
Allison intercepted an errant Wesleyan pass and scored at the
other end. Thirty seconds later, April Joseph did the same, and
Texas College took command of the game. Colemans late
three-pointer closed the gap a little, sending the teams to the
locker room with the score 33-22.
The second frame provided little drama, as the
Lady Rams continued to lose control of the ball. Guards Kori Yates
and Jashana Pitt struggled with the frontcourt pressure, and
rarely had players rushing back to help them. By the time the Lady
Rams offense got into gear, they had given up too many easy
buckets, and were too far behind to mount a comeback.
Allison scored 13 points in the second half to
finish with a game-high 19 for Texas College. She also recorded
nine steals. McElwee finished with 14, and April Joseph had 12.
Sharia Irons nabbed a game-high 10 rebounds and scored six points.
For the Lady Rams, Ashley Walker led with 16
points thanks to ten of 12 shooting from the free throw line. She
also led the squad with eight rebounds. Shawndrika Courtney scored
ten and had five boards, and Kimberly Cooper scored six with seven
rebounds. Shayla Coleman, with eight points, snapped her five-game
streak of scoring in double figures.
Wesleyan (7-8, 1-4) committed 44 turnovers on
the night, and drop below .500 for the first time this season.
They will play Huston-Tillotson College in the Sid Richardson
Gymnasium at 5:30 PM on Saturday night.
