Rams drop doubleheader to Northwood
April 3, 2004

CEDAR HILL, Texas - After winning the opening game of the series against conference-rival Northwood, 13-10, on Friday afternoon, Texas Wesleyan lost both ends of a doubleheader against the Knights on Saturday afternoon.

The Rams (21-18, 7-5 RRAC) dropped the opening game of the doubleheader to Northwood, 11-6, and the Knights also out dueled the Rams in game two, 13-9, to take the series victory.

In game one, freshman Drew Jeffcoat (4-2) suffered the loss, allowing six runs, three of which were earned, off of eight hits, while walking two and striking out three batters.

Centerfielder Mark Smajstrla led the Ram attack, going 2-for-4 with a home run and a RBI. Left fielder Eric Vaughn only went 1-for-4, but capitalized by driving in three runs on the day. Catcher Matt Putman drew three walks during game one.

In game two, sophomore Ryan Cowgell (2-1) picked up the loss for the Rams. The Burleson, Texas native, allowed seven runs on four hits, while walking eight batters and striking out three.

Third baseman Derek Armstrong led Texas Wesleyan, going 3-for-5, with an RBI, and second baseman Anthony Bolivar finished 2-for-4.

After falling down 5-0, after the first inning, the Rams stormed back to tie the game in the fifth inning. In the bottom of the fifth Northwood fought right back pushing across seven runs to put the game out of reach.

"We were able to score runs today, but our defense and pitching let us down," head coach Mike Jeffcoat said. "Those two things are usually our strong suit, but we made too many errors and walked to many batters to have a chance to win."

Texas Wesleyan will be back in action Tuesday when they host in-state rival Howard Payne. The doubleheader is set for 4 p.m. at LaGrave Field.
