Texas Wesleyan had no answer for College of the Southwest's offensive attack,
as the Mustangs banged out 20 hits on its way to a 22-5 victory Friday afternoon
in the Red
River Conference Tournament, knocking the Rams out of the tournament.
College
of the Southwest jumped out early, scoring three runs in the first inning and
one run in the third inning. The fifth inning proved to be the decisive one, as
the Mustangs scored eight runs to take a commanding 12-1 lead. In that inning,
College of the Southwest collected eight hits, which included three back-to-back
home runs.
The Mustangs put five more runs
on the board in the next two innings, before Texas Wesleyan finally got something
going in the bottom of the seventh, scoring an unearned run, an RBI-single from
first baseman Drew Jeffcoat and a 2-RBI single from catcher Nathan Brandt.
Sophomore
Shea Harrison (4-4) suffered the loss for the Rams, allowing five runs on eight
hits, while walking one and striking out four batters in four innings of work.
Collecting
the hits for Texas Wesleyan was centerfielder Mark Smajstrla, shortstop Corey
Stansell, Brandt and Jeffcoat.
With the loss,
Texas Wesleyan ends its season with an overall record of 26-29.
