FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University men’s basketball team (15-6) improved to 8-3 in Red River Athletic Conference play by defeating Southwestern Assemblies of God University (6-17, 4-9) 71-60 in the Sid Richardson Center on Saturday.
The game took on an added significance because Texas Wesleyan Head Coach Terry Waldrop was one of numerous coaches around the country who wore tennis shoes during the game in support of Coaches for Cancer, an organization that fights the disease through fund raising and public awareness. A portion of tonight’s ticket sales will go to support Coaches for Cancer.
The Lions shot 40% in the first half and managed to keep the game close. A pair of free throws from Fred Eshon with eight seconds on the clock sent Texas Wesleyan to the locker room with a 32-28 lead.
In the second half, the Rams shot 59% from the floor while holding SAGU to just 38%. The frame started with a three from CJ Higginbotham that sparked an 11-0 run. In the first ten minutes of the half, Texas Wesleyan out scored SAGU 25-8 to lead 57-36. From that point, the Rams cruised to the 71-60 win.
Higginbotham led all scorers with 19 points. Evan Patterson and Kelvin Williams each finished with 13 while Eshon pitched in 10 for the Rams. SAGU was led by 12 points from both Jeremy Bowman and Jake Sones.
Texas Wesleyan will return to action on Monday, when they travel across the Metroplex to take on Paul Quinn College. That game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off. |
