RAMS WIN AT THE BUZZER
February 4, 2007

Box Score

LANGSTON, OK:  In a matchup that seemingly always comes down to the final possession, the Texas Wesleyan University men’s basketball team (15-8, 8-2 RRAC) used a tip from Kennith Gober as the final horn sounded to top Langston University (14-13, 4-6) by a score of 60-58 on Monday.

The game evoked memories of Texas Wesleyan’s last game at Langston when CJ Higginbotham delivered a 54-53 win with a buzzer-beating three-pointer.

The Lions hit each of their first four three-point attempts and took a quick 14-4 lead.  A poised Texas Wesleyan team chipped away at the lead until a fade-away jumper from Gober gave the Rams their first lead at 21-20.

On the next Texas Wesleyan possession Hector Mukweyi scored on a jam and converted a conventional three-point play to make it a four-point contest, but Langston closed the half with a score from Meshon Lewis to trail 24-22 at the break.

The Rams picked it up offensively in the second half shooting 55% from the field.  Texas Wesleyan led by as many as eight, 34-26, but Langston scored seven unanswered to close the gap at 34-33.

With just under three minutes to play, Alburey Doss gave the Lions a 53-52 advantage when he hit one of two at the line.  In the final minute, Gober drained a three, but Phillip Brooks answered with a three-point play to put Langston back on top at 58-57.

Fred Eshon hit one of two free throws to tie the game with 43 seconds remaining.  On the ensuing possession, Texas Wesleyan forced a turnover with nine seconds to play.  After a timeout with three seconds remaining, Aaron Scott’s shot rimmed out, but Gober was there for the game-winning tip.

Eshon led the Rams with 18 points while Gober was good for 14.  Eshon and Gober also combined to go 6-for-9 from long range.

Three Lions reached double-figures in scoring led by Brooks’ 18 points.

The Rams will return to action on Saturday when they host Texas College.  As a part of Think Pink Week, Texas Wesleyan is encouraging all fans to wear pink to the game.  That contest is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
