February 14, 2007

Box Score - Game One

FORT WORTH, TX:  The 18th ranked Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (4-4) swept a doubleheader from Jarvis Christian College on Thursday.  The Rams took game one 4-2 and game two 4-0 at Sycamore Park.

In game one, the Bulldogs loaded the bases with two down in the third, but third baseman Zach Smith made a terrific diving stab at a ground ball down the line and threw Axel Torres out at first base to end the threat.

Brandon Frazier got the Rams on the board in the bottom of the third with a two-run triple down the right field line.  Frazier then scored on a grounder from Antoine Cole to make it 3-0 Texas Wesleyan.

An RBI single from Hommy Rodriguez made it 3-1 in the fourth, but the Rams added a run with singles from Zach Smith, Taylor Miller, and Butch Ballez in the bottom of the frame.

The Bulldogs turned a leadoff single from Christian Frias into a run in the sixth.  In the seventh, Ruben Perez reached on a one-out double to bring the tying run to the plate.  Hayden Lackey then entered the contest and nailed down the final two outs to pick up his first save of the season.

Jayson Rachuig (1-1) earned the win after allowing two runs on five hits while striking out three in five innings pitched.  Juan Pachot (0-1) took the loss after allowing four runs, two earned on six hits while striking out six in six innings of work.

Frazier and Cole started game two with consecutive singles and scored to give the Rams a 2-0 advantage.  Meanwhile Joey Evans retired each of the first eleven hitters he faced.

The Bulldogs threatened in the fourth when Axel Torres singled with one out Felix Rivera followed with a ground rule double, but Evans got out of the jam with a ground ball to third.

Texas Wesleyan added a run with an RBI single from Harrison Law, but Jarvis minimized the damage by getting out of a bases loaded one out situation with a double-play.

Frazier doubled and scored in the sixth to bring the score to 4-0 Texas Wesleyan.

Joey Evans (1-1) picked up the win after allowing just two hits and striking out six in five innings pitched.  Jesse Wright picked up his first save of the season after striking out three in a perfect final two innings.

Raul Nieves (0-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs on seven hits in five innings pitched.

The Rams will return to action on Saturday, when they host Hillsdale Free Will Baptist College.  Game one of that doubleheader is scheduled to start at 12:00 p.m.
