FORT WORTH, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University men’s basketball (75-64) moved to 10-2 in Red River Athletic Conference play after a 75-64 win over Southwestern Assemblies of God University (8-17, 2-10) at the Sid Richardson Center on Saturday.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair that saw five ties and seven lead changes. A three from Brendon Johnson brought SAGU to within one, 34-33, with 18 seconds to play. Fred Eshon answered with a trey of his own with four seconds to play, and the Rams went to the locker room with a 37-33 lead.
After the contest was tied at 46, the Rams used an 11-3 run to take control. SAGU cut the lead to four, 64-60, with 6:13 to play, but Eshon answered again with a three pointer on the Rams’ next possession. Texas Wesleyan was able to pull away down the stretch for the 75-64 win.
The Rams committed 21 turnovers in the contest, but SAGU scored just 14 points off turnovers while Texas Wesleyan poured in 21 off of 16 Lion miscues.
Texas Wesleyan shot 43% from the field, 41% (9-of-22) from long range, and a very solid 72% from the free throw line. The Rams also dominated the boards, taking a 41-25 rebounding margin.
Kennith Gober led all scorers with 20 points. Eshon finished with 16 and Dalane Finley added 11 for the Rams. Hector Mukweyi and Dane Dmitrovic both turned in double-doubles. Mukweyi had 13 points and 11 boards, while Dmitrovic had 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Gerren Hamilton led the Lions with 17 points.
The Rams return to action on Monday, when they make the trip across the Metroplex to meet Paul Quinn College. That game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start in Dallas, TX. |
