GEORGETOWN, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University baseball team (11-7) racked up 32 hits in a doubleheader sweep at Southwestern University (7-9) on Saturday. The Rams prevailed 15-4 in game one, and 16-9 in game two.
In game one the Rams pounded out 15 hits. Southwestern recorded 11 hits in the contest, but the Pirates stranded 10 base runners in the seven inning contest.
The Rams got on the board first when Ryan Jacobi doubled, stole third and scored on a ground ball from Zach Smith. However, the Pirates came right back with a two-run triple from John Wooten in the bottom of the first.
The Texas Wesleyan offense struck for four runs in the fifth. Jacobi added an RBI single. Smith followed with a two-run single, while Kyle Harmon drove in a run with a ground out.
After giving up a run in the bottom of the fifth, the Rams batted around and scored five runs in a sixth inning highlighted by a two-run homer from Jerry Fisher. In the seventh, the Rams sent eleven men to the plate and scored five more runs to go up 15-3.
Steven DeFratus (2-2) got the win after allowing three runs on six hits while striking out six in five innings of work. Southwestern’s Eric Gonzalez (1-2) allowed five runs on seven hits in five innings pitched in the loss.
Jacobi was a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Brandon Frazier added a 3-for-4 performance, while Smith had a pair of hits and four RBI in the contest.
Game two featured 17 more Texas Wesleyan hits. This time it was the Pirates striking first with three runs in the bottom of the second, but the Rams turned it on in the top of the third. Texas Welseyan plated seven runs on six hits including a bases-clearing double from Smith and a two-run single from Ryan Ragsdale. Antoine Cole added a two-run single as part of a three-run fourth, and a solo home run in a four run fifth inning to put the Rams on top 14-3.
The Pirates plated five runs on five hits and a Texas Wesleyan error in the sixth, but the Rams added two more in the seventh.
Aaron Wimpee (3-0) got the win after working 3.2 scoreless innings of relief. Kyle Belski (0-3) took the loss after allowing seven runs on eight hits in three innings pitched.
Smith went 3-for-3 with five RBI and three runs scored. Cole was 3-for-4 with four RBI and three runs scored.
The Rams return to the field on Tuesday, when they travel to Plainview, TX, to take on Wayland Baptist University. That game is scheduled for a 6:00 p.m. first pitch. |
