FORT WORTH, TX: The 5th ranked Texas Wesleyan University men’s golf team is in fifth place after first round action at the UST Texas Intercollegiate at Hawks Creek Golf Club. The Rams are just two shots out of third place and seven strokes behind the front-runner, 3rd ranked Oklahoma City University.
The field of eleven teams features six squads ranked in the NAIA’s top-25, including top ranked Oklahoma Christian Univeristy who checked in at seventh (299).
The Rams were led by a strong round from Armando Villarreal who is tied for fourth with a round of 71. Mitch Hendon is tied for 12th at 73, while Paco Saracho is tied for 18th at 74. Kevin Doskocil shot 79 (T44), and Carlos Arenas shot a round of 80 (T47) to round out Texas Wesleyan’s card for an overall total of 297.
Oklahoma City’s Julian Valenciana and Southern Nazarene Univeristy’s Marek Ruzicka lead the field of 67 individuals after posting scores of 69. Valenciana’s Stars sit atop the leader board at 290, just one stroke ahead of Ruzicka’s Crimson Storm.
Texas Wesleyan’s Gold team checked in at 10th overall with a score of 311. Drew Koonce (T22) and Stuart Martin (T28) led the way with rounds of 75 and 76 respectively.
Final round action will take place on Monday at Hawks Creek.
