ABILENE, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University men’s soccer team (1-0) took a convincing 8-0 win in their season opening contest at McMurry Univeristy (0-1) on Friday.
After Theo Nabassi got the scoring started in the eighth minute, Adis Druzanovic got hot. The sophomore scored on a penalty kick in the 15th minute and scored again in the 33rd minute. Three minutes later Druzanovic found Rafael Franco for another goal that gave Texas Wesleyan a 4-0 lead at the intermission.
Cameron Stapleton found the net in the 68th minute. Vedran Ceric and Kyle Fritz scored in the 75th and 77th minutes. Christian Villasenor capped the scoring on a pass from Chamquin Prince in the 81st minute.
The Rams controlled the ball well, taking a 28-10 advantage in shots and 11-1 in corner kicks. The Rams also put 18 of those 28 shots on the net.
Joakim Soderbaum needed five saves to pick his third career shutout.
“This was a good start for our team,” commented head coach Josh Gibbs. “Anytime you can win convincingly like that, especially on the road, you’ve got to be happy.”
The Rams will take on Howard Payne University on Saturday. That game is scheduled for a 5:00 p.m. start in Brownwood, TX. |
