Admission Requirements

Conditional admission into the clinical portion of the Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP) is granted to all students declaring Athletic Training as a major.  Freshman or transfer students must complete their first two semesters with provisional (conditional) status.  First year or provisional students will complete an observation component only and will not be required nor allowed to work directly with athletes.  Provisional students who wish to continue studies in Athletic Training beyond the first year must make application to the professional preparation phase of the program at the end of the first year of studies.  Entrance to the professional preparation phase is competative.  Application scores are based on GPA, faculty recommendations, student application letter, and timely completion of the application process.  Once the applicant has submitted all of the required materials the ATEP admissions committee, consisting of ATEP faculty, on campus Approved Clinical Instructors, and one non-ATEP faculty member, will meet to review materials and rank them with a numerical score.  Applicants with the highest overall application scores will be given preference when clinical space is limited. The application process includes the following:

  • Submission of athletic training student application
  • Submission of a letter to the Athletic Training Education Program Director indicating a desire to seek a career in Athletic Training and a request for admission to the professional prep clinical portion of the program.
  • Completion of KIN 2107, 2203, 2309, and 2307 with a grade of B or better.  (Grade of B is a minimum requirement for consideration.  A grade of A receives more points toward admission.)
  • Completion of BIO 1340 and 1140 with a grade of C or better. (Grade of C is a minimum requirement for consideration.  Grades of A or B receive more points toward admission.)
  • Completion of BIO 1341 and 1141 with a grade of C or better. (Grade of C is a minimum requirement for consideration.  Grades of A or B receive more points toward admission.)
  • Submission of current transcript as proof of GPA for previously listed course requirements.
  • Submission of a written recommendation in conjunction with a completed Recommendation Form
  • Completion of all Level One (provisional) clinical competencies.  These are evaluated in KIN 2203 and 2309.
  • Submission of proof of student liability insurance.
  • Submission of proof of student health insurance.
  • Submission of proof of Hepatitis B vaccine. (Series must have been started.)
  • Submission of a completed medical history, physical examination, and innoculation record.
  • Deadline for ATEP Application process is on "Dead Day", the day before finals begin, each spring semester.  Students that fail to submit all of the application materials (except for class grades in progress) by the deadline must reapply by "Dead Day" the following semester.

Once admitted to the Professional Preparation Phase of the clinical program, students must continue to meet all requirements for retention in the program.  These specific retention requirements are found in the Texas Wesleyan University Athletic Training Program Student Handbook given to each student upon entrance to the ATEP.
