Music Department Hosts Stanley Warren

Clip art of musical G clefThe Texas Wesleyan Music Department celebrates the opening of the spring semester by hosting tenor Stanley Warren, of Union University, Jackson, Tennessee. Warren will present a master class at 3 p.m. Monday, Jan. 29, and a recital at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30, in Martin Hall. Both events are free and open to the public.

The recital will be centered around a song cycle by Robert Schumann entitled Dichterliebe (“Poet’s Love”). Written by Heinrich Heine, the poems are a collection which Schumann set to music after his long struggle to marry Clara Wieck, his piano teacher’s daughter. The poet was a vocal critic of German romanticism and his pieces often display a biting irony that mocks romantic convention, although it is debated how much of that irony Schumann chose to portray in his musical settings.

Warren earned his master’s degree and performing certificate from Eastman School of Music. He then traveled abroad to study with different renowned teachers, such as Sir Peter Pears in London. Warren has also served as a faculty member at AIMS in Graz, Austria; The Aspen Music Festival; and the Berkshire Choral Institute. Warren has received critical acclaim for many of his roles including Quint in Britten’s The Turn of the Screw and the title role in Shaw’s Pygmalion.
