Open Mic Night Oct. 12

Microphone Texas Wesleyan's national literary magazine, Aries, will host open mic night from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 12, in the University Club (basement of the Administration building.). Original poetry, spoken word, creative non-fiction, flash fiction, photography, vocals, instrumentals, and artwork are all welcome. Refreshments and prizes provided. Breast Cancer Awareness: Denim and Pink Day Oct. 13
Pink breast cancer awareness ribbon October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Student Life is sponsoring Denim and Pink Day on Friday, Oct. 13. For a donation of $5 toward breast cancer research and education, you will receive a pink ribbon and a ticket to be able to wear jeans on Friday, Oct. 13. Chemistry Seminar: Erika Zuñiga, NIH-MHIRT Fellow
Ram cartoon for chemistry departmentPlease join the Department of Chemistry for a special seminar. Senior biochemistry student Erika Zuñiga will talk about her research experience this summer in the Dominican Republic as part of a National Institutes of Health grant coordinated through Cornell University in New York. The presentation will be from 12 to 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 13, in McFadden Room 306. All are welcome.

Domestic Violence Awareness Luncheon

Domestic violence awareness ribbonTexas Wesleyan Campus Security is sponsoring a domestic violence awareness luncheon at 12 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19. Officer Rick Benson with the Fort Worth Police Department will speak about personal safety and situational awareness. The event is $3 per person and will be held in the Dora Hall Private Dining Room. New Videos Posted on Media Services Web Site

Wesleyan flame logoTwo new features have recently been posted on the Media Services web site. The first is an interview with Bobby Bragan, a beloved benefactor of Texas Wesleyan. His professional baseball career spanned sixty years, playing for and managing teams including the Dodgers, Pirates, and the Fort Worth Cats. In 1998 he donated his letters, library, and sports memorabilia to the University. In May of 2006 the library staff conducted an interview of him.      The second, a new promotional/recruiting video for Texas Wesleyan, is available in chapters. Produced by the Heartland Alliance of America, the video is available online at www.txwes.edu/mediaservices/heartlandtwuvideo.htm.

New Facilities Staff Members

The Facilities Operations department welcomes two new staff members, Felisa Barnes and Chad Crocker. Barnes, manager of security, comes to Texas Wesleyan with extensive knowledge and experience with campus security. She is certified as a School Resource Officer and worked in security at Louisiana College in Pineville, LA. She was also a certified police officer with the City of Grambling, LA Police Department. 

     Chad Crocker, assistant director of facilities, has fourteen years of experience in facilities operations and an extensive background in building automation and controls systems. He was the central plant supervisor at Texas Women’s University in Denton before joining Texas Wesleyan University. Crocker holds an MBA from the University of North Texas in administrative management.

Alumni in the News

In the News Three Wesleyan alumni have been featured in the Fort Worth Star Telegram this week. Nika Maples, BS '02, was named the state's 2007 Secondary Teacher of the Year by the Texas Education Agency. An editorial about her appeared on Saturday, Oct. 7. Misty Matcham, BS '06, first-year science teacher at Shady Brook Elementary School in Bedford, was featured in an article about her long and difficult journey into the classroom. Her article was in the Northeast edition on Sunday, Oct. 8. Christina (Hesse) Myers, BS '03, teacher at D. McRae Elementary in Fort Worth was featured in an article on Monday, Oct. 9. When Christina was a child she was diagnosed with a brain tumor that blinded her right eye. Christina participated in Ride for Kids on Oct. 8; she rode on a motorcycle with about 200 other riders to raise funds for brain tumor research and treatment for kids.
