International Fair Thursday, Oct. 18

Clip art of a globe As a part of International Week, the International Club will present the annual International Fair on from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18 in the Louella Baker Martin Pavilion. All students, faculty and staff are invited to come take a trip around the world as the international students showcase their cultures and countries with displays, music, photos and food. Domestic Violence Awareness Week at the School of Law

Trombone Recital

Photo of Dr. Bryan EnglishBryan English will be presenting a trombone recital at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, in Martin Hall. There will be several guest performers and a wide variety of music, including classical, jazz, and film score. Two of the selections were commissioned by English and this performance will be their premiere. English will be accompanied by Jessica Koebbe on piano. Both performers serve on the instrumental faculty at Texas Wesleyan University. Admission is free. Reception to follow at the Baker Martin Pavilion.

Theatre Wesleyan Presents The Radio Show: It's a Wonderful Life

Photo from the radio show It's a Wonderful LifeSet in 1946, The Radio Show presents life behind the scenes at the TXWS Radio Station. The on-air talent and behind the scenes technicians are all characters in this period recreation of the reading of It's a Wonderful Life. The Radio Show: It's a Wonderful Life is adapted by Connie Whitt-Lambert, professor of theatre, from the film by Frank Capra and the story by Phillip Van Doren Stern. The show, featuring Theatre Wesleyan students and directed by Joe Brown, professor of theatre, runs Oct. 19 through Nov. 10 at the Artisan Center Theater in Hurst (418 E. Pipeline Road, Hurst, TX 76053). Special ticket price of $8 for all Wesleyan students, faculty, and staff. Wear Jeans to Work Day - Friday, Oct. 19

Logo of FMA The Financial Management Association (FMA) at Texas Wesleyan is sponsoring "Wear Jeans to Work Day" on Friday, Oct. 19 for $5. FMA, a student organization for students majoring in finance or similar majors, will use the proceeds for organizational events, including a trip to the Federal Reserve Bank in downtown Dallas. FMA brings speakers to campus and takes field trips in order to apply the knowledge they learn in the classroom to real world jobs. Flu Shots at the Health Center

Flu shots will be given from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, in the Health Center. Cash (exact change) or check (made out to Texas Wesleyan) will be accepted. Luke Nichols Promoted to Maintenance Supervisor

Photo of Luke NicholsLuke Nichols has been promoted to Maintenance Supervisor. His experience makes him well suited to this position. Nichols has been with Texas Wesleyan University for five and a half years as a maintenance technician.

Study Abroad Photo Contest

Clip art of camera Participants from last year's study abroad programs were invited to submit three pictures each to the Study Abroad Photo Contest. At least one picture from each of the trips to Scotland, Paris, Croatia, Brazil, Mexico and Croatia were chosen as finalists. The 12 final photographs in the Photo Contest will be on display during International Week in the Brown-Lupton Student Center Lobby for the entire week. All students, faculty and staff are encouraged to view the photos and vote for their favorite. Voting will take place until Thursday at 5 p.m. The winner will receive $100 so don't forget to vote for your favorite today!

Book Signing and Roundtable Discussion:  Grace & Gumption: Stories of Fort Worth Women

Photo of Brenda Taylor MatthewsBrenda Taylor Matthews, associate professor of history at Texas Wesleyan, has been published as a contributing author for Grace & Gumption: Stories of Fort Worth Women. Matthews has contributed a chapter about Our Lady of Victory for the book, which is a history anthology including artists, African-American women, children’s advocates, cowgirls, clubwomen, entertainers, Hispanic women, Jewish women, journalists, nuns, philanthropists, pioneers, politicians, professional women, and temperance leaders. Matthews and her collaborators will be signing books and participating in a roundtable discussion from 2 to 5 p.m. (discussion at 3 p.m.) Sunday, Oct. 28, at the Firehouse Art Gallery in Fort Worth (4147 Meadowbrook Dr.)

Alumna Wins Third Emmy Award

Tamlyn Wright at 2007 EmmysTamlyn Wright, BA '92, received a 2006-2007 Emmy award for Outstanding Art Direction for Variety, Music or Nonfiction Programming for her work as art director on the 79th Annual Academy Awards.

        Wright received an Emmy in 2005 for her work on the 47th Annual Grammy Awards, and in 2003 for work on the 75th Academy Awards.

     Wright is a freelance art director and production designer in Hollywood. She has designed the look and feel of many high-profile productions, including such live programs as the Oscars, the MTV Movie Awards, and the 2004 Democratic National Convention.

Dryden and Reed Present at European Conference on Reading

Photo of Ann Reed and Lisa DrydenLisa Dryden, professor of education, and Ann Reed, associate professor of education, recently presented at the European Conference on Reading in Berlin, Germany. Their topic was"Setting the Stage for Success through Communication, Expression, Articulation and Minifestation: Practices for the Enhancement of Oral Language Development." The conference was attended by thousands of educators from all around the world and 50 participants were in their session.

     Reed and Dryden have been presentation partners for more than eight years. As Dryden says, "We began presenting at the state level and found that we work extremely well together. We branched out to the national level, then internationally." They have presented on literacy topics in Denmark, Switzerland, Ireland, Guatemala, Germany, and coast to coast in the U.S.
