Congratulations to Summer Grads

Wesleyan flame logoCongratulations to the two staff members who received degrees at the end of the summer session: Denelle Rodriguez and Ellen Shelby-Doyle. Rodriguez, assistant director of operations for the Office of Admission, received a bachelor of science in liberal studies. Shelby-Doyle, night clerk at the West Library, received a bachelor of science in history.

Closing Nights: "The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged)," Oct. 4 and 5

Photo of cast of The Complete Works of Shakespeare (Abridged)Theatre Wesleyan presents "The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged)." The show will be at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 4-5 in the Law Sone Fine Arts Center, 1205 Binkley. "The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged)" is a parody of the comedies and tragedies written by the Bard. Three actors recreate unusual versions of 37 plays in an “abridged” form with a performance time of approximately 98 minutes.

    Written by Adam Long, Daniel Singer & Jess Winfield, the production will be directed by Connie Whitt-Lambert, professor of theatre and chair of the theatre department, with technical direction by Bryan Stevenson, assistant professor of theatre.

    Ticket Prices: general admission, $8; Wesleyan faculty/staff, $6; all students w/ID, $4; senior citizens, $4. Box office hours: 1:30-5 p.m. and one hour before curtain on performance days. Comedian, Actor Mark Curry to Lecture at Texas Wesleyan

Photo of Mark CurryComedian and actor Mark Curry, best known as the star of the TV sitcom “Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper,” will be the featured speaker during the 2006 Willson Lecture Series at Texas Wesleyan University. He will talk about overcoming obstacles and living your dreams. Curry’s lecture will focus on growing up in the inner city, using his comedy to get ahead, and coming out on top.

     The lecture will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10, in Martin Hall. Admission is free. The event is sponsored by the chaplain’s office.

In addition to his sitcom, which ran for five seasons on ABC, Curry is also known for hosting “Showtime at the Apollo.” He had a recurring role opposite Kirstie Alley in Showtime’s “Fat Actress” series and he played an NBA correspondent in “ESPN’s Cold Pizza.” His current projects include appearing in the new season of Def Comedy Jam on HBO. Texas Wesleyan Receives $83,550 TG Grant

Wesleyan flame logoTexas Wesleyan University is the recipient of an $83,550 award from TG (formerly known as Texas Guarantee). Titled "Pathways to Success," this project is designed to improve student retention rates by providing need-based aid for specific targeted student populations as well as pre-collegiate outreach services through support of our sponsored high school GO Centers at Polytechnic and Castleberry High Schools. Pati Alexander, vice president of enrollment and student services, will lead the initiative with support from Shanna Hollis, director of financial aid, and Holly Kiser, director of admissions.

Two-Part Lecture Series on Graduate School Begins Oct. 10

The first workshop, from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10, will focus on answering the question: Is Graduate School Right for You? Parker J. Palmer in the Metroplex Oct. 12 and 13

Logo of Courage & Renewal North TexasParker J. Palmer, author of A Hidden Wholeness and Let Your Life Speak, will speak at two events Oct. 12 and 13, sponsored in part by Texas Wesleyan University. Palmer will speak and answer questions about vocation, spirit and life journey Thursday, Oct. 12, at the University of Texas at Arlington. He will be the keynote speaker and will facilitate a session entitled “Reconnect who you are with what you do” Friday, Oct. 13. Palmer is a highly respected writer, teacher and activist who focuses on issues in education, community, leadership, spirituality and social change. Ten years ago, he founded the national Center for Courage & Renewal, which oversees the “Courage to Teach” program for K-12 educators across the country and parallel programs for people in other professions, including medicine, law, ministry and philanthropy.

      The Evening with Parker Palmer ($20) and the Day of Professional Development ($105) are open to any interested individuals and are particularly geared toward educators, clergy, health care practitioners, legal professionals, community leaders, and other helping professions. Sullivan Promoted to Senior Counselor

Photo of Jennifer SullivanJennifer Sullivan has recently been promoted to senior counselor for freshman admissions. She will also coordinate Methodist recruitment efforts. Sullivan, BA ’98, worked in the Office of Admission as a student at Texas Wesleyan, and has worked as a transfer counselor since July 2003.

Publishing News: Linda Metcalf

Photo of Linda MetcalfLinda Metcalf, assistant professor in the graduate counseling program, has recently completed a manuscript for Prentice-Hall publishers titled "How to Say It to Get Into College." The book will be out in June 2007.  She is also working on a revision of her first book, Counseling Toward Solutions, for John Wiley Publishers, and she will be writing a companion to that book entitled Counseling Toward Solutions: The School Program. Metcalf will travel to Norway in November to teach school counselors and teachers the concepts behind her first book. Additionally, Metcalf will present "Solution Focused School Counseling" to the Texas Counseling Association in San Antonio in December.
