Polytechnic Cemetery to Receive Special Recognition March 5

THC logoPolytechnic Cemetery will receive its official Historic Texas Cemetery designation during a ceremony at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 5. Polytechnic Cemetery is located at 1000 Bishop St., between Aves. B and C. A reception with light refreshments will follow in the Louella Baker Martin Pavilion, located at 1112 Wesleyan St.

     All members of the Texas Wesleyan community are invited to join the Texas Historical Commission (THC), Tarrant County Historical Commission, Texas Wesleyan University representatives, Tarrant County and Fort Worth officials to celebrate the designation of Polytechnic Cemetery is the 1000th Historic Texas Cemetery. Descendants of those buried in the cemetery, which dates back to 1895, will be on hand to participate in this special tribute.   

     The Texas Wesleyan University history faculty members and students began researching the Polytechnic Cemetery in 1997. In 2002, with help from Mae Bruce and her family, and under the instruction of Dr. John Matthews, students mapped the cemetery. Click here to read an article in the Star-Telegram about the cemetery.

Checks will be printed on Thursday, March 6, and will be available for pick-up Friday, March 7, in the Cashier’s Office.

2008 Goostree Symposium with Keynote Speaker Congresswoman Kay Granger, '65

Photo of Kay GrangerCongresswoman Kay Granger, R-Fort Worth, will be the keynote speaker for the annual Faye C. Goostree Symposium on Tuesday, March 18, at Texas Wesleyan. Granger, currently the only Republican woman to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives from Texas, earned a Bachelor of Science from Texas Wesleyan in 1965 and was honored with a doctorate in 1992.

     The symposium, “Rocking the Cradle and Rocking the System: Women in Politics,” will begin with Granger’s keynote address at 12:15 p.m. in Martin Hall. The keynote speech is free and open to the public. A luncheon will follow at 1:15 p.m. in the Louella Baker Martin Pavilion. Reservations are required for the luncheon; the cost is $15 for general admission, $12 for Texas Wesleyan faculty and staff, and $8 for students.    Granger, who is currently the highest ranking Republican woman in the House, stepped into a national leadership role in the war on terrorism based on her work with Iraqi women. In the course of three congressional delegation visits over two years to the Middle East, she worked with and mentored Iraqi women who now either hold elected positions or are leaders in their communities. She also co-chairs the Iraqi Women’s Caucus. Granger sits on the Appropriations Committee and serves on the Defense, Homeland Security and Military Construction/Veterans Affairs Appropriations Subcommittees. Granger co-chairs the Anti-Terrorism Caucus and serves as the Conference’s Vice Chair and as a deputy whip.

Expanding Your Horizons Science and Math Conference for Middle School Girls

logo for expanding your horizons Texas Wesleyan will host the 20th Annual Expanding Your Horizons in Science and Mathematics conference for middle school girls from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 29, in the Sid W. Richardson Center, located at 1100 S. Collard. Attendees participate in hands-on activities during workshops presented by professional woman in the science or mathematics fields.
      Parents and teachers are invited to volunteer at the conference and/or attend the adult workshops, scheduled to take place during the student workshops. The adult workshops well include All About College, Psychology of the Middle School Girl, and Math/ Science Activities.
      Expanding Your Horizons stresses the value of science and math and seeks to increase young women’s interests in these fields. The program provides approximately 350 girls with information about career opportunities, helps them develop and discover their own interests and talents and introduces them to female role models with careers in math/science/related fields.
      The conference is $5 per person. Cost includes conference activities, a morning snack, lunch and a T-shirt. Attendance is limited and registration is required. Relay for Life

logo for Relay for Life The American Cancer Society Relay For Life is the largest cancer fighting event in the nation. The relay inspires leadership and teamwork and while bringing together the community to raise funds for cancer research, prevention, patient support programs and to further advocacy efforts.
      The event will be held at Farrington Field in Fort Worth on April 4-5. Relay For Life is a 12-hour overnight event in which teams of 8-15 people take turns walking around the track. The event is held overnight to symbolize the fact that cancer never sleeps. At this year's "Carnival Against Cancer," there will be radio stations on-site, raffles, food, games, live entertainment and music throughout the evening and into the night to keep the energy flowing. The event kicks off at 6 p.m. Friday, April 4.

Wear Red Day a Success

Thank you to everyone who participated in Texas Weselyan's Go Red Day Feb. 28. Your show of support advanced the American Heart Association’s vital outreach and education efforts. A total of $350 was raised toward Texas Wesleyan's goal for the 2008 Heart Walk on Sept. 13. For more information about heart disease, visit the American Heart Association's website.
