Mother's Day All-Bach Piano Recital

G ClefBruce McDonald, visiting assistant professor of philosophy and religion, and John Fisher, professor of music, will perform an all-Bach piano recital at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 13, in the sanctuary of Arlington Heights United Methodist Church. This Mother's Day concert is free an open to the public. Johann Sebastian Bach wrote several suites for keyboard and stringed instruments, and the particular collection which became known as the English Suites dates from his Weimar (1708-1714) period, preceding the French Suites and Partitas and comprising, in total, the first part of the Clacierubung (Keyboard Practice). The English Suite No. 5 in E minor, which McDonald will perform, displays the widest range of moods between each of the movements, with a robust prelude and gigue sandwiching a delightful miniature-like allemande, a stately courante and a charming pair of  passpieds, one “en rondeau.” John Fisher will perform Partita No. 1 in B-flat Major, S. 825, and the concert will conclude with Concerti for Two Keyboards in C Minor. Arlington Heights UMC is located at 4200 Camp Bowie Boulevard in Fort Worth. For more information, please call the church office at (817) 737-3161 or email ahumc@ahumc.com.

The Texas Wesleyan University Athletic Department celebrated the outstanding achievements of its student-athletes on Friday, April 27. With three teams still in competition, the Rams have won two conference championships and seven national titles. They boast four All-Americans with several more to come by spring’s end, and over 30 percent of their athletes have posted GPA’s of 3.0 or higher. Texas Wesleyan also announced that through the outstanding efforts of Marty and Patsy Clifford, as well as Gene and Ann Burge, the school has purchased all new training equipment for what will be christened the “Patsy and Marty Clifford Fitness Center.” The Rams also honored their seniors and presented numerous special awards.

One of the most inspirational stories of the year was CJ Higginbotham of the men’s basketball team.  Higginbotham was a walk-on with the Rams junior varsity squad four years ago. This season, his senior year, he earned an opportunity to start. He proceeded to light up the world by leading all collegiate divisions in three-point percentage at 53 percent (89-168) while leading the Rams with 15.7 points per game. He earned All-American status while earning a second All-American Scholar Athlete award (available only to juniors and seniors). On Friday, he received the school’s Most Outstanding Male Athlete Award and the O.D. and Maurice Bounds Men’s Scholar Athlete Award, given to the individual male junior or senior athlete with the highest cumulative GPA. Mrs. Maurice Bounds graced the department with her presence by attending the Athletic Banquet for a 64th time.
