Texas Wesleyan University Receives Nearly $2 Million from U.S. Department of Education

Wesleyan flame logoTexas Wesleyan University has been selected to receive nearly $2 million from the U.S. Department of Education's Strengthening Institutions Program. Texas Wesleyan was the only university in the state to receive this award and was one of 20 institutions nationwide. Congressman Michael Burgess’ office notified Texas Wesleyan of the award.

     The grant award will be approximately $400,000 per year for 5 years, beginning October 1, 2007. The Strengthening Institutions Program funding totals $1.98 million over five years and includes money for instructional technologies, academic programming using the Learning Community Model, and transforming the advising process.

Wesleyan Magazine Honored with Bronze Quill Award from IABC
Cover of Wesleyan magazineThe Fall 2006 Wesleyan magazine, which featured monarch butterflies on the cover, was honored with a Bronze Quill award from IABC (International Association of Business Communicators) during an awards ceremony Tuesday, June 26. One of the judges wrote, “This is a beautiful, well-organized, well-planned piece with excellent, diverse stories that truly encompass the accomplishments of the entire university. In my opinion, this publication could rank up there with other top alumni publications in the state. Also, beautiful photography and design!” The judge awarded the maximum number of points possible for the finished product. Laura Hanna, director of communications and editor of the magazine, received the award during the ceremony.

Chemistry Department Hosts Teacher Quality Physical Science Program

Ram cartoonThe Chemistry Department hosted a three-week Teacher Quality Physical Science Workshop June 4-22. The program focused on enhancing teacher content knowledge in the areas of light, color and astronomy. The program, funded by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, pays full tuition for 18 elementary and middle school teachers. The two-part program will continue in the fall and spring of the 2007-2008 academic year. The Teacher Quality Project Director, Ricardo Rodriguez, professor of chemistry, has been involved in teacher science content enhancement through both the Eisenhower and Teacher Quality Enhancement Program since 1990.

Mikhail Barash to Perform

Violin Mikhail Barash will perform Kreisler selections on his Stradivarius violin at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28, in Martin Hall. Piano accompaniment will be provided by John Fisher, professor of music and chair of the department. A reception will follow in the Louella Baker Martin Pavilion. Both events are free and open to the public. The concert and reception are sponsored by the Office of the President, the Office of Advancement, the Office of Alumni Relations, and the Music Department. Pérez Places First in Toastmasters Speech and Evaluation Contests

Photo of Judy PerezJudy Pérez, co-coordinator of Graduate Business Programs and member of the Texas Wesleyan Spellbinders #6572 (Toastmaster International Organization), placed first in both the Division C International Speech and Evaluation contests in April. She had won first place in both contests at the Area 32 level in March. Both area and division contests were held on Texas Wesleyan’s main campus. Pérez progressed and represented Texas Wesleyan Spellbinders #6572 at the District 25 Toastmaster International Conference in both the Evaluation and Speech Contest, held in Dallas in May. Congratulations to the Texas Wesleyan Spellbinders for a great presence in your club, area, and district.

     Visitors are always welcome (community, faculty, staff, alumni, & students) at the weekly meetings, which are held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Armstrong Mabee Business Building, room 102. This Thursday, June 28, they will be celebrating the 20th anniversary of club #6572. Everyone is welcome to help them celebrate and hear wonderful speeches. New Arrival: Kenedy Renee Millikan

Photo of Kenedy Renee MillikanCongratulations to Kevin Millikan and his wife, Kelly, on the birth of their daughter, Kenedy Renee. Kenedy was born Thursday, June 14, at 6:46 p.m.; she weighed 7 lbs., 7 oz., and measured 21 inches long. Millikan is athletic director and head golf coach at Texas Wesleyan.

Basketball Camp Roundup

Rams logoThe second annual basketball camp, put on by the men's basketball team, was "absolutely great," AAron Whaley, assistant dean of students for campus involvment, reports. Forty-five kids participated in the week-long camp. "We gave out all kinds of Wesleyan jerseys and shorts, they had individual contests and everybody left with something. It was a fantastic week and we look forward to our Third Annual Basketball Camp next year, which will be the first week of June 2008."

First Annual Wesleyan-Hughes Volleyball Classic

Wesleyan Volleyball logo Texas Wesleyan Volleyball will host the first annual Wesleyan-Hughes Volleyball Classic Sept. 14-15, 2007. The tournament will support the Becky Hughes endowment, and will kick off with the Saturday Volleyball Alumni Reunion and conclude with the Annual Alumni Match.

      Hughes coached volleyball at Wesleyan from 1979-1991. She has already been inducted into the Wesleyan Hall of Fame for her contributions and success sustained during her tenure at the University. Hughes still holds volleyball coaching records for the best overall record of 369-194 and winning percentage .655 at Wesleyan. Her Wesleyan volleyball teams made nine appearances at the NAIA National Volleyball Tournament. She continues to contribute to Texas Wesleyan, the volleyball program and volleyball communities on a national level.

     Any donations (monetary, concessions, awards, trophies, prizes, gift certificates or raffles) are greatly appreciated. Clark, professor of biology at Texas Wesleyan, has created Genome Island within Second Life to help teach biology and genetics to her undergraduate students. Click here to read the full article. Chemistry Professor or Soccer Coach?

clip art of soccer ball The Crowley Stars U-16 girls' recreational soccer team, coached by Ricardo E. Rodriguez, professor of chemistry, and Abel Garcia, won first place in the Arlington Soccer Association Spring Open Division Under-16 age bracket. The Stars completed the spring season with a 10-0-0 record, scoring 57 goals while allowing just 3. During the course of the fall 2006 and spring 2007 seasons, the Rodriguez/Garica-coached Stars won two first-place division trophies, a first-place trophy in the Hurst Turkey Shoot Soccer Tournament, and placed second in flight at the North Texas State tournament. The team completed the year with a 22-2-2 record.
