Wesleyan Staff Members Quoted in Fort Worth, Texas Magazine
Fort Worth, Texas magazine quotes three Texas Wesleyan staff members in its August 2007 issue. Hector Quintanilla, dean of the School of Business, and Sherri Mata, director of career services, spoke to "Education's Changing Face: Majors offered by universities are adjusting to meet the demands of today's job market," and Holly Kiser, director of admission, spoke about the freshman transition experience in "The Big Picture: 10 Things Every Parent Should Know About College." The article, "Education's Changing Face" focused on why colleges offer certain majors and how colleges are changing their offerings to suit these concerns. "For a university, market demand comes from two different areas: what the student want to do and what society needs them to do. When the market demands certain types of skills or certain types of job or careers, that affects how universities look at their majors, which ones they offer and what skills and knowledge are taught in those programs," Mata said. Quintanilla noted the importance of accreditation: "Our school and most schools of business with quality programs have specialized accreditation. Accreditation allows an outside agency to document your activities and provide assurance to students and outside stake holders that you're running a quality program." Among the list of "10 Things Every Parent Should Know About College," was the fact that "Your comfort zone is linked to their safety net." Kiser pointed out that "just about everything freshmen encounter is a stressor, but each experience helps them grow and learn. The stress begins when students are making decisions and visiting campuses. Moving into the residence hall, being alone - sometimes for the first time - dealing with roommates, and experiencing different levels of academic requirements are especially stressful....It's important for parents to be aware of their child's stress levels." |
