Mikhail Barash to Perform
Mikhail Barash will perform Kreisler selections on his violin at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28, in Martin Hall. Piano accompaniment will be provided by John Fisher, professor of music and chair of the department. A reception will follow in the Louella Baker Martin Pavilion. Both events are free and open to the public. The concert and reception are sponsored by the Office of the President, the Office of Advancement, the Office of Alumni Relations, and the Music Department. Academic Convocation: August 28
Mark your calendars for the fall Academic Convocation at 12:05 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 28, in Polytechnic United Methodist Church. Beverly Volkman-Powell, '92, will be the keynote speaker.

Trinity River Trash Bash
The annual Trinity River Trash Bash will be from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 15. The cleanup will be at five locations; the closest to Texas Wesleyan is at the Hope Church at Beach and I-30. There will be a post-cleanup celebration at Rockwood Park on the banks of the Trinity River from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The party will include a free lunch and drinks, giveaways and entertainment. If anyone is interested in going as a group from Wesleyan, the deadline to sign-up is Tuesday, Sept. 4. Sign-up forms are located on the bulletin board outside the chaplain's office (PUMC 314). All participants will receive a free T-shirt, and trash bags and gloves will be provided. For more information, contact the Chaplain's Office at 817-531-4461. |
Back to School Bash for School of Education Alumni
Catch up with former classmates and Texas Wesleyan faculty at the Back to School Bash for School of Education Alumni from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 23, in the Louella Baker Martin Pavilion. There will be vendors with cool stuff to decorate your classroom and help teach your students. There will also be giveaways from local school supply vendors, the Alumni Association and the Texas Wesleyan Bookstore. Refreshments will be served. Fall Hours for Dora's Cafe
Dora's Cafe is open for the fall semester. Regular hours for the Cafe are 7 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday-Friday; 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Willson Lecture Series: Dr. Stacey Floyd-Thomas
This year's Willson Lecture Series will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, in Martin Hall. The speaker will be Dr. Stacey Floyd-Thomas, associate professor of ethics and black church studies at Brite Divinity School. Floyd-Thomas has written several books and is an outstanding speaker who is in much demand around the country. More information regarding the event will be distributed as the date gets closer. Wesleyan Chorale Begins August 27
The Wesleyan Chorale begins its fourth year on Monday, Aug. 27. Rehearsals will be held from 5:45 to 7 p.m. in Martin Hall. The chorale's first performance will be Mozart's Grand Mass In C Minor, scheduled for Nov. 13. All members of the Wesleyan community are invited to join the chorale, which is an ensemble comprised of music students, alumni, faculty and staff, and is intended to give a University community experience for all those interested in singing quality choral music. Anyone interested in joining is invited to email director Steve Simons or just show up for rehearsal on Monday, Aug. 27.

First Annual Wesleyan-Hughes Volleyball Classic
Texas Wesleyan Volleyball will host the first annual Wesleyan-Hughes Volleyball Classic Sept. 14-15, 2007. The tournament will support the Becky Hughes endowment, and will kick off with the Saturday Volleyball Alumni Reunion and conclude with the Annual Alumni Match.
Hughes coached volleyball at Wesleyan from 1979-1991. She has already been inducted into the Wesleyan Hall of Fame for her contributions and success sustained during her tenure at the University. Hughes still holds volleyball coaching records for the best overall record of 369-194 and winning percentage .655 at Wesleyan. Her Wesleyan volleyball teams made nine appearances at the NAIA National Volleyball Tournament. She continues to contribute to Texas Wesleyan, the volleyball program and volleyball communities on a national level.
Any donations (monetary, concessions, awards, trophies, prizes, gift certificates or raffles) are greatly appreciated. Donations of $25 or more to the Becky Hughes Endowment will be recognized on a "Banner of Appreciation" that will hang in the competition gym. Spellbinder Club Members Honored at Awards Banquet
The Texas Wesleyan Spellbinders Club #6572 of Toastmasters International was well-represented at the District 25 annual awards banquet in early August. The Spellbinders were honored as a Super 7 club for having all of their executive officers trained in 2006. Diana Pittman, MBA ‘04, treasurer of the Texas Wesleyan Spellbinders, was named the District’s Chief Judge of the year for 2006-2007. David Martin, MBA '04, president of the Spellbinders, was named the inaugural recipient of the Dr. Curtis Trent Award for his service, leadership and dedication to District 25 for the 2006-2007 year. Michael Meier, MBA '06, and Valerie Mitchell, BBA '06, received recognition for completing their Competent Communicator Education Awards. David Martin received recognition for completing his Competent Leader Education Award as well as being recognized for having a distinguished area while serving as the Area 61 governor. Raun Shepard, BBA ’02, was recognized as a President’s Distinguished Area while serving as the Area 11 governor.
Anyone who is interested in improving their public speaking and leadership skills is encouraged to attend the weekly Texas Wesleyan Spellbinder meetings, Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Armstrong-Mabee Business Center, room #102. Jane Mitchell Celebrates 20 Years at Texas Wesleyan
Jane Mitchell, head cashier, will mark 20 years with Texas Wesleyan on Aug. 31. Mitchell has been head cashier for all 20 of those years. She's been offered other positions over the years, Mitchell says, but she chose to stay in her current position. "I love working with the students," she says. Prior to working at Texas Wesleyan, Mitchell was a preschool teacher for nine years. Mitchell's two children both graduated from Wesleyan; her daughter Karri earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1996 and her son Chad graduated with a Bachelor of Science in 1997.
