News from Texas Wesleyan University in Burleson
Texas Wesleyan University in Burleson opened its doors for the first time in January 2006. The following three bachelor’s degree programs are currently offered: EC-4 Elementary Education Generalist, General Business and Liberal Studies. In accordance with its partnership with Hill College – a two year community college based in Hillsboro, Texas, and also located at the Burleson site – Texas Wesleyan offers a bachelor’s degree completion program for individuals wishing to transfer to Wesleyan from Hill College after completing either an associate of arts degree or approximately 60 credit hours. Students who wish to transfer credit from other accredited colleges or universities are accepted as well. For the past eight months, enrollment has grown from five students in the spring 2006 term to more than 50 for the fall 2006 term. Two new full-time education
faculty, Drs. Lorrie Webb and Kim Tyler, have been hired and began teaching in August. Besides the new faculty, Admission Counselor/Regional Recruiter Tony Narvaez was welcomed to the staff and has two work study students this fall.
There is now a fully functional student computer lab, equipped with eight computers and a laser printer. One large classroom for 30, two classrooms for 25 and one small classroom for 15 students are furnished and ready for occupancy. Texas Wesleyan has a very good relationship with Hill College staff and classrooms are shared as needed. The Burleson campus expects to soon have at least one mobile computer “smart classroom” set-up. The student center, shared by Hill College, has been set up with tables, chairs, soda machines, a comfortable sitting area and the wireless Cyber Café.
Through involvement with the Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, and other civic organizations and activities, the campus has integrated itself into the Burleson community. Texas Wesleyan has participated in the Honey Fest Celebration, Lion’s Club 4th of July Parade, and is now planning for the Burleson High School Homecoming Parade in October as well as the Rotary Club Parade of Lights in December. The City of Burleson, as well as residents and businesses, have been extremely welcoming and the future is bright for Texas Wesleyan University in Burleson.
