Theatre Wesleyan Presents "The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged)"

Photo of cast of The Complete Works of Shakespeare (Abridged)Theatre Wesleyan presents the first production in the 2006-2007 season, "The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged)." The show will be at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 28-30 and Oct. 4-5, and 2 p.m. Oct. 1 in the Law Sone Fine Arts Center, 1205 Binkley. "The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged)" is a parody of the comedies and tragedies written by the Bard. Three actors recreate unusual versions of 37 plays in an “abridged” form with a performance time of approximately 98 minutes.

    Written by Adam Long, Daniel Singer & Jess Winfield, the production will be directed by Connie Whitt-Lambert, professor of theatre and chair of the theatre department, with technical direction by Bryan Stevenson, assistant professor of theatre.

    Ticket Prices: general admission, $8; Wesleyan faculty/staff, $6; all students w/ID, $4; senior citizens, $4. The box office will open Tuesday, Sept. 26. Box office hours: 1:30-5 p.m. and one hour before curtain on performance days. Box office phone: (817) 531-4211. Administrative Training Financial Refresher Classes

Financial charts and books Administrative Financial Refresher Classes will be held Thursday, Sept. 28, and Wednesday, Oct. 18. This class is required for all budget managers and initiators. Space is limited per session, please RSVP to Lindsay Choice via email or at (817) 531-4444 to reserve your date/time. Meetings will be in the Library Orientation Room. Topics covered are: purchasing cycles, payables, budget and expense transfers, reimbursements, initiator/approver overview, purchase orders, receiving, requisitions, hiring, terminating, timesheets, and HR/payroll deadlines.

Comedian, Actor Mark Curry to Lecture at Texas Wesleyan

Photo of Mark CurryComedian and actor Mark Curry, best known as the star of the TV sitcom “Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper,” will be the featured speaker during the 2006 Willson Lecture Series at Texas Wesleyan University. He will talk about overcoming obstacles and living your dreams. Curry’s lecture will focus on growing up in the inner city, using his comedy to get ahead, and coming out on top.

     The lecture will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10, in Martin Hall. Admission is free. The event is sponsored by the chaplain’s office.

In addition to his sitcom, which ran for five seasons on ABC, Curry is also known for hosting “Showtime at the Apollo.” He had a recurring role opposite Kirstie Alley in Showtime’s “Fat Actress” series and he played an NBA correspondent in “ESPN’s Cold Pizza.” His current projects include appearing in the new season of Def Comedy Jam on HBO. Two-Part Lecture Series on Graduate School Begins Oct. 10

Parker J. Palmer in the Metroplex Oct. 12 and 13

Logo of Courage & Renewal North TexasParker J. Palmer, author of A Hidden Wholeness and Let Your Life Speak, will speak at two events Oct. 12 and 13, sponsored in part by Texas Wesleyan University. Palmer will speak and answer questions about vocation, spirit and life journey Thursday, Oct. 12, at the University of Texas at Arlington. He will be the keynote speaker and will facilitate a session entitled “Reconnect who you are with what you do” Friday, Oct. 13. Palmer is a highly respected writer, teacher and activist who focuses on issues in education, community, leadership, spirituality and social change. Ten years ago, he founded the national Center for Courage & Renewal, which oversees the “Courage to Teach” program for K-12 educators across the country and parallel programs for people in other professions, including medicine, law, ministry and philanthropy.

      The Evening with Parker Palmer ($20) and the Day of Professional Development ($105) are open to any interested individuals and are particularly geared toward educators, clergy, health care practitioners, legal professionals, community leaders, and other helping professions. Toastmasters: Humorous Speech and Table Topics Contest

Woman at podium Get ready to laugh as the best speaker in the area is chosen Sept. 28, when five local Toastmasters clubs conduct their annual Area 32, District 25 Humorous Speech and Table Topics Contest. The event will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 28, in Martin Hall on the Texas Wesleyan campus. Admission is $2. Representatives from all five Fort Worth area clubs will be participating. The competition will culminate at the District Speech Contest Nov. 17-18 in Westlake. The Texas Wesleyan Spellbinders meet at 6:30 p.m. (beginning Oct. 5) every Thursday in Room 105 of the Armstrong-Mabee Business Building. For more information, visit www.twuspellbinders.org.

CIA Recruiter on Campus Oct. 23

American flag The Central Intelligence Agency will be presenting information concerning career and internship opportunities within their organization. A recruiter will be presenting in the GPNA lecture hall at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 23. The following day, on-campus interviews will be conducted throughout the day in West Library's orientation room. David Burris, CIA Southwest Region Recruitment, will be recruiting students from all academic disciplines.

School of Education News

Wesleyan flame logoPatsy Robles-Goodwin, new faculty in the School of Education, and Carol Hagen from UNT presented an all-day seminar Sept. 20 titled, From Theory to Everyday Practice; Welcoming Children of Diverse Family Cultures into Early Childhood Programs at Region 10 in Richardson. The presentation was attended by 25 Head Start teachers and parents. Robles-Goodwin and Hagen will return in January to present the second component of the series which is part of the Head Start Program initiatives for preparing teachers and paraprofessionals to work and better understand teaching and working with diverse children and their families.

     Lisa Dryden and Ann Reed will speak Thursday, Sept. 28, at the International Reading Association Midwest regional conference in Omaha, Nebraska. Their topic is Phonological Awareness Strategies for Young Children. Reed and Dryden are frequent collaborators and presenters locally, nationally and internationally.
