Academic Programs | Distance Learning | Admission | Registration | Enrollment & Financial Aid | Technical Are academic courses self-paced? No. Academic courses are instructor-led and follow the same semester schedule as the university. All specific course information is in the syllabus, including how to reach the instructor, what work is expected, and deadlines to turn in assignments and take tests. Are online credit courses equivalent to onsite courses? Yes. All courses meet the same criteria as the onsite equivalent. Online/ITV courses are taught by the same professors that teach on campus. What can I expect in an online academic course? You can expect the same rigorous requirements as you would find in a similar face-to-face course. Because of the Internet-based delivery, you will find yourself doing as much or more reading and writing than in traditional learning environments. Some courses may also include CD-ROMs, streaming audio or video. Class discussions and group projects are usually facilitated by using online conference and chat utilities. What courses are offered online? There is a listing of courses offered online on the Course Catalog page. This varies from course to course. Some courses do not have required face-to-face meetings other courses do. You should review the course syllabus or contact the course instructor for attendance requirements. How do I know if online learning is right for me? Any student considering an online education course or program should be concerned about being prepared for the rigors of the online environment. Take the Test of Online Learning Success (ToOLS) to help you assess your preparedness. Who succeeds in the online classroom? Certain people are better suited to distance learning than others. A student who succeeds in distance education is generally: self-motivated and self-disciplined; has the ability to work independently; is comfortable with the written word and the use of e-mail; and will ask for help when needed. Although commuter time is reduced, an online student must have the time to dedicate to coursework. Students in an online classroom should expect to spend as much or more time on their course than in an onsite classroom. Additionally, a distant learner must meet the technical requirements and be comfortable with the equipment. Can I start a distance course at any time during the semester? No. Classes offered at a distance begin and end according to the university academic calendar. What are the requirements for admission? Admissions requirements vary by program. Contact the admissions office for specific program requirements. What is the application process for online/ITV programs? The application process for online/ITV programs is the same as residential programs. You must submit an application for admission, official transcripts, and other required documentation for evaluation. Contact the admissions office for more information. How do I register for courses? If you have been admitted to the program/university, you may register for courses using RamLink. Can I register for an online/ITV course without being admitted to the university? No. In order to enroll in an academic course, you must be admitted as a student. How will I have access to my online course? Enrolled students can access course materials using Blackboard. For instructions, visit the Course Access page. What if I need to drop a course? If at any time after registration or during a semester you wish to drop your course, you must contact the course instructor and inform him/her of your decision. S/he will assist you with dropping the course. How do I obtain a copy of my official transcript? Official transcripts should be requested from the Office of Student Records. Is financial aid available for distance courses? Yes. The same financial aid resources used for on campus courses are also available for distance education courses. Can I use my Veteran's Affairs (GI Bill) or Hazlewood Benefits to pay for courses? Yes. Students eligible to use Veterans Affairs and Hazlewood benefits may use the benefits for distance courses. How do I get to my course? Visit the Course Access page for information about how to access your course. What if I have technical trouble? Texas Wesleyan provides 24/7/365 technical support for students, faculty, and staff using Blackboard through the Embanet Help Desk. What special software do I need? Different courses require different plug-ins. Visit the Browser Plug-Ins page for links to the latest plug-ins. In addition to plug-ins, you may need additional application software (Office 2007, etc.). How do I use the tools in Blackboard? Tutorials focusing on the use of tools available in Blackboard are available online. |
