From the Associate Provost

Photo of Helena BussellWelcome to Texas Wesleyan this Spring 2008!

My name is Helena Bussell, and I am Texas Wesleyan’s Associate Provost. I joined Texas Wesleyan in 1996 as the assistant to the provost and have been in the provost office ever since, with a brief period as University Registrar. Before joining Texas Wesleyan, I worked as Director of International Programs and Services at Georgia College & State University, an institution that’s part of the University System of Georgia. Just like all of you come from diverse backgrounds, my background represents many cultures and a not-so-straight line before coming into this position. I was born in Sweden, lived in both the Netherlands and Germany growing up, traveled around the world during a year off from college, and moved to the U.S. as a one-year exchange student in 1986. And I’m still here! As a matter of fact, I became a U.S. citizen this past November! My undergraduate degree is in “general studies,” and I hold an M.B.A., both from Georgia College, and my Ph.D. is in history from the University of Texas at Arlington.

Well—what’s an associate provost? Among other things, my role here is to direct the academic service areas to ensure that you guys get the support you need to do well in your classes. Please know that the ARC, the Freshman Mentorship program, Career Services, Academic Advising, International Programs, and Wesleyan’s many other student support services, are all here to support you, so make sure to take advantage of what they have to offer! Most of the academic student support services areas are located in the ARC in the West Library or you can visit them on the web: www.txwes.edu/provost/studentresources.

As associate provost, I would also be remiss if I didn’t remind you to become familiar with the academic requirements listed in the Catalog and your degree audit information in RamLink. The Office of Student Records can help you with that as well.

Please let me know if I can help you in any way. I’m housed in the Provost Office in the Administration Building.

K. Helena Bussell, Ph.D.

Associate Provost

In the ARC he helps coordinate the day-to-day adminstrative functions, has developed the student tutoring services, and tutors students in English.
New Developmental Programs

The purpose of the Texas Wesleyan Developmental Program is to help students persist to graduation by providing appropriate developmental education in order to perform satisfactorily in college-level coursework. Wesleyan offers developmental reading, math, and English courses. These courses are designed to improve students' skills. Usually after only one or two developmental courses, most students are ready to progress to college-level courses. Studies show that students who started out in developmental courses have a tendency to do very well later in college-level courses. The developmental courses do not count towards hours needed for graduation, but these hours do figure into a student’s overall GPA.

International Programs

betsyMake Travel Part of Your Education

Want to go to Europe or South America? Did you know you can see the world and get credit for it? Texas Wesleyan has several inexpensive study abroad programs. The most popular programs are the faculty-led classes that travel over spring break, Maymester or summer for 10-15 days. These short trips are usually offered for humanities, religion, history, education, music or theater credits. If you are at all interested in traveling abroad, plan to take your electives or some required courses in faculty-led study abroad classes. Many of the classes are upper division, so you can go your sophomore, junior or senior year. It’s important to learn which classes are available so you can plan your curriculum. You can also study abroad for a semester or year. Since the study abroad courses will count toward graduation, you can use your college loans and grants to pay for the classes. To learn more about the Study Abroad courses, go to www.txwes.edu/international programs/studyabroad.htm or contact Betsy Johnson, Director of International Programs, at 817-531-4965 or ejohnson@txwes.edu. There will be Study Abroad Fairs Tuesday, Feb. 5, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Brown Lupton Student Center Lobby and Wednesday, Feb. 6, from 8:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. in the School of Business Lobby. There will also be a Scholarship and Funding Workshop on Wednesday, Feb. 13, from 2 to 3 p.m. in the Library Orientation Room.

ROTC
Photo of Col. Joye

Lieutenant Colonel (LTC) Rodney Joye, a 37-year Army veteran, has been assigned to the Texas Wesleyan University campus to develop and grow the Wesleyan Military Science Department.

LTC Joye holds a master's degree in history and a BA in political science, is a graduate of the Command and General Staff College and has taught at The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. He is an Infantry Officer who was a ROTC commissionee at Elon University, recently returned from an assignment in Iraq, and has serve as an enlisted soldier, Non Commissioned Officer and as a Commissioned Officer. He is married, and has two sons and one daughter. For many years he has volunteered much of his time to youth programs, the community and the church. He is a parishioner at Saint Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church on Magnolia Avenue in Fort Worth.

The Wesleyan Military Science program offers several important academic and career opportunities for our students. Students may enroll in Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) classes as an elective and receive transcript credit, yet have no further obligation to the military.

They may also enroll and continue to seek their degrees while simultaneously earning a commission as an officer in the US Army, Army Reserve, or Army National Guard. This second option opens many career doors for those who wish to either serve the nation as career Army officers or those who wish to pursue a dual career tract – in their chosen civilian profession and as a reserve component officer.

For Wesleyan students who need assistance with the high cost of college, the ROTC program offers many full academic scholarships and offers tax free stipends for cadets who are fully active in the ROTC program. Find out more by contacting LTC Joye at 817-531-4273 or rjoye@txwes.edu.

Library Information

Photo Kaeli VandertulipMeet Kaeli Vandertulip, an information services and reference librarian with West Library. Kaeli studied biology-genetics, microbiology, and-especially-forensic biology before becoming a librarian. She changed to library sciences after discovering that the things she loved about biology-reading research articles, finding data, understanding the concepts-were things she could do more readily in a library than a lab. She's now thrilled to be part of the West Library's Reference Department, along with Maria Cunningham, reference librarian. Kaeli helps students, faculty, and staff pick topics for research, find the best information for their needs, learn how to use library tools, and (hopefully) passing on her love of reading, information, and lifelong learning to library patrons.
In her spare time, she (of course) reads voraciously, gardens, and plays with her son, Gryphon.
Kaeli can be reached at 817-531-4809.

Floorball at Texas Wesleyan University

Photo of floorball playersA young sport with its roots in Sweden, floorball will now be available at Texas Wesleyan University. Try to imagine a more gentle version of field hockey, but played in a gymnasium. The game is quick, easy to learn, and started out as a social game in the backyards of Sweden. Now it has grown to become the second most popular sport in Sweden (after soccer), and is spreading all over the world. Two students, Joakim Soederbaum and Ryan Authier, decided to bring the game to Texas Wesleyan, beginning with an introductory session at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4, in the Sid Richardson Gym. All equipment will be provided. All you need to bring is indoor shoes and plenty of energy. Don’t miss the chance to check out the fastest growing sport on earth! For more information, visit www.twfloorball.com.

Have You Been Kissed? Come by the ARC for a Kiss on Valentine's Day!

Clip art of Valentine's Day Candy On Valentine's Day, Feb. 14New Student Programs will be giving out Hershey's Kisses and candy for all students. Come by and help yourself! Also, if you're in need, we will have math and writing tutors available throughout the day. And while you're here, check out the Career Services job postings on the board outside the ARC.

Mark Your Calendars, Freshmen!!!

It’s not too early to begin thinking about the summer and fall semesters. The Freshman Advising Center will be hosting its Annual “Freshman Scoop” on Thursday, April 3. The Freshman Scoop is a chance for all freshmen to schedule an advising appointment for the summer and fall semesters. Advising occurs by appointment during the Freshman Advising Weeks of April 7-17 to prepare for registration on Friday, April 18. Be on the lookout for reminder emails, fliers, and postcards for more information. The Freshman Advising Team can be reached at 817-531-5824.

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life is the largest cancer fighting event in the nation.  At the Relay, we honor all those we know who have battled cancer, whether they have lost the fight or are bravely battling the disease. The Relay is fun and inspirational and inspires leadership and teamwork and while bringing together the community to raise funds for cancer research, prevention, patient support programs and to further advocacy efforts. Relay For Life is a 12-hour overnight event in which teams of 8-15 people take turns walking around the track. The event is held overnight to symbolize the fact that cancer never sleeps.

The event will be held at Farrington Field in Fort Worth on April 4-5.  At this year's "Carnival Against Cancer", there will be radio stations on-site, raffles, food, games, live entertainment and music throughout the evening and into the night to keep the energy flowing. The event kicks off at 6 p.m. Friday, April 4.  Around 7:30 p.m., Survivors will take to the track for the opening lap. This is a very appropriate kick off as it inspires all who are present and brings forth the faces of those who have met this dreaded disease head-on. There will also be a luminaria ceremony at night where lighted candle bags will line the track, each one honoring or memorializing a loved one or friend who has faced cancer.
