From the Associate Provost
My name is Helena Bussell, and I am Texas Wesleyan’s Associate Provost. I joined Texas Wesleyan in 1996 as the assistant to the provost and have been in the provost office ever since, with a brief period as University Registrar. Before joining Texas Wesleyan, I worked as Director of International Programs and Services at Georgia College & State University, an institution that’s part of the University System of Georgia. Just like all of you come from diverse backgrounds, my background represents many cultures and a not-so-straight line before coming into this position. I was born in Sweden, lived in both the Netherlands and Germany growing up, traveled around the world during a year off from college, and moved to the U.S. as a one-year exchange student in 1986. And I’m still here! As a matter of fact, I became a U.S. citizen this past November! My undergraduate degree is in “general studies,” and I hold an M.B.A., both from Georgia College, and my Ph.D. is in history from the University of Texas at Arlington. Well—what’s an associate provost? Among other things, my role here is to direct the academic service areas to ensure that you guys get the support you need to do well in your classes. Please know that the ARC, the Freshman Mentorship program, Career Services, Academic Advising, International Programs, and Wesleyan’s many other student support services, are all here to support you, so make sure to take advantage of what they have to offer! Most of the academic student support services areas are located in the ARC in the West Library or you can visit them on the web: www.txwes.edu/provost/studentresources. As associate provost, I would also be remiss if I didn’t remind you to become familiar with the academic requirements listed in the Catalog and your degree audit information in RamLink. The Office of Student Records can help you with that as well. Please let me know if I can help you in any way. I’m housed in the Provost Office in the Administration Building. K. The purpose of the Texas Wesleyan Developmental Program is to help students persist to graduation by providing appropriate developmental education in order to perform satisfactorily in college-level coursework. Wesleyan offers developmental reading, math, and English courses. These courses are designed to improve students' skills. Usually after only one or two developmental courses, most students are ready to progress to college-level courses. Studies show that students who started out in developmental courses have a tendency to do very well later in college-level courses. The developmental courses do not count towards hours needed for graduation, but these hours do figure into a student’s overall GPA. |
Want to go to Europe or South America? Did you know you can see the world and get credit for it? Texas Wesleyan has several inexpensive study abroad programs. The most popular programs are the faculty-led classes that travel over spring break, Maymester or summer for 10-15 days. These short trips are usually offered for humanities, religion, history, education, music or theater credits. If you are at all interested in traveling abroad, plan to take your electives or some required courses in faculty-led study abroad classes. Many of the classes are upper division, so you can go your sophomore, junior or senior year. It’s important to learn which classes are available so you can plan your curriculum. You can also study abroad for a semester or year. Since the study abroad courses will count toward graduation, you can use your college loans and grants to pay for the classes. To learn more about the Study Abroad courses, go to www.txwes.edu/international programs/studyabroad.htm or contact Betsy Johnson, Director of International Programs, at 817-531-4965 or ejohnson@txwes.edu. There will be Study Abroad Fairs Tuesday, Feb. 5, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Brown Lupton Student Center Lobby and Wednesday, Feb. 6, from 8:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. in the School of Business Lobby. There will also be a Scholarship and Funding Workshop on Wednesday, Feb. 13, from 2 to 3 p.m. in the Library Orientation Room. |

The Wesleyan Military Science program offers several important academic and career opportunities for our students. Students may enroll in Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) classes as an elective and receive transcript credit, yet have no further obligation to the military. They may also enroll and continue to seek their degrees while simultaneously earning a commission as an officer in the US Army, Army Reserve, or Army National Guard. This second option opens many career doors for those who wish to either serve the nation as career Army officers or those who wish to pursue a dual career tract – in their chosen civilian profession and as a reserve component officer. For Wesleyan students who need assistance with the high cost of college, the ROTC program offers many full academic scholarships and offers tax free stipends for cadets who are fully active in the ROTC program. Find out more by contacting LTC Joye at 817-531-4273 or rjoye@txwes.edu. |
