HONOR SOCIETIES

Alpha Kappa Delta is an international Honor Society establised in 1920 to provide a forum for Sociology students to meet and discuss their research projects. There are over 70,000 lifetime members and 440 chapters in the world. This honor society encourages presentation of student research at Sociological meetings, hosts speakers throughout the year, and generally encourages Sociological prefessionalism. Pi Gamma Mu is an international Honor Society formed to encourage the study of the social science and to recognize outstanding achievement through election of membership and the presentation of various awards for distinguished achievement. Recruiting goes on during the first part of Fall and Spring semester. Contact Dr. Betsy Alexander if you are interested. Phone 531-4920, email ealexander@txwes.edu.

Qualifications are: Completed 20 hours in the social sciences (economics, geography, history, political science, psychology, sociology), overall GPA of 3, better than 3.0 GPA in social sciences.

PRE-PROFESSIONAL PROGRAM

This is a program for students intending to go to graduate school to pursue a career in the helping professions - medicine, law, psychology, ministry, counseling, university teaching, and other social professions. Students need to have a 3.0 GPA to be involved in this program, or to have the approval of the Director. Membership in this program comes automatically when a student signs up for any of the Pre-Professional classes. Benefits include an examination of ethical issues in the professions and practical preparation and guidance to get into graduate school. Also three Law School scholarships are awarded every year.

Sociological research involves finding out what other sociologists have already discovered about your topic. The West Library DataBase (Sociological Sources) is a good place to start. You need your student ID to log into that site - unless you are in the library. There are a lot of alternative sites online.

Writing a Research Paper

There are many things that go into writing a good research paper. Critical Thinking is important. But also being careful of your language, and knowing what you want to say. It is also very important NOT to plagiarize - which some define as copying more than five consecutive words from your source. Be sure to give your sources the proper credit. And remember, it is not too hard in these days of the internet, to find copied papers. Here are a few interesting and useful sites.
